For those who have seen the new cover, it is very interesting. I am in love with astronomy so I had to smile when I saw the cover. This interesting looking image is not some artists work but something found in space. It is a 'Planetary Nebulae'. This particular nebula is known to astronomers as the "Hourglass Nebula' (MyCn 18). This Hourglass nebula is 8000 light years away and this photo was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope about 7 years ago. There is a shape that appears to be a eye in the center of it, which Pearl Jam did not add, this is the actual image of this nebula. Oh, sorry, a planetary nebula is basically this, it has nothing to do with planets, that is very misleading. It is basically a star who reaches the end of its life cycle. Once this happens, it swells up to a huge size (Ex. Our Sun would expand out to around Mars's orbit when it dies - dont worry, not for another 4.5 million years). Once it swells to this size, some stars matter basically starts to float off into space because of a lack of gravity. The small black circle in the center of the nebula (Binaural album conver) is something called a white dwarf (yes, i know its not white). That is just a very dense hot star which shinks down to about 1/1000 the radius of our sun, or the size of Earth. (Still very dense though, 1 tablespoon of this matter would be equal to about 100 (or 1000?) tons on Earth.
